Dedicated to Asian dance and music. Keeping the arts communities informed, connected and energised. Highlighting hot spots of creativity and cutting-edge practise, making these ancient art forms ever relevant and refreshed.
Directed by Mayuri Boonham, ATMA is a vibrant dance company that presents inspirational contemporary work using bharatanatyam to create an eloquent, unpredictable dance aesthetic. By pushing a traditional form into new conceptual territories, the company’s work reflects the meeting of ancient Indian thought with contemporary experience.
Trained in Bharatanatyam under Prakash Yadagudde at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, London, Mayuri went on to co-found Angika Dance Company with Subathra Subramaniam. Over a period of 11 years Angika created a wealth of critically acclaimed works, touring nationally and internationally before the company was dissolved to allow each artist to follow their own path.
In 2010 Mayuri founded ATMA, aiming to pursue her passion to evolve the movement language of bharatanatyam whist exploring the spirituality in contemporary life. Recent works Sivaloka and Ghatam have toured nationally, strengthening Mayuri’s long-standing collaboration with India’s leading electronica composers Midival Punditz.
