Milapfest presents Pandit Ranajit Sengupta, widely recognised as one of the leading sarod musicians of our time, having toured extensively all over the world and collaborated with a wide range of musicians. Ranajit is accompanied by internationally renowned tabla artist Kousic Sen.  Together they present a programme of pieces displaying the artistic brilliance of the famous Maihar Gharana.

Samsara

Samsara features a collective of distinguished musicians driven by the belief that music is a powerful force bringing people together. In this exciting collaboration, musicians from both the Jazz and Indian music genres come together to create a brilliant new sound – approaching the idea of fusion in an organic and meaningful way. Being two very distinct styles, Jazz and Indian classical music also share key similarities such as the adherence to rhythmic cycles and musical freedom through improvisation.

In this unique concert, the tabla takes centre-stage, where it’s normally seen as an accompanying instrument.

Music for the Mind and Soul Featuring Alif Laila

Alif Laila is a USA based classical sitarist with a great talent for rendering ragas. She is also a painter, and is widely recognised for her exploration into the conceptual elements of music, looking at colour, tone and texture, as a spontaneous response between artist and instrument. A student of the Maihar Gharana, she expertly blends deep notes, with contrasting high notes to create a freedom of expression characteristic of the style. Alif will be accompanied by expert tabla player Kousic Sen.

Great British Gharana

A Gharana is a particular style of teaching and performance in Indian classical music, that might be followed by generations of families or groups. With immigration to Britain and the influx of superb Indian music artists, Britain is now home to a unique new Gharana that reflects contemporary British culture and audiences today. The Great British Gharana is a celebration and showcase of some of Britain’s best Indian music talents, and features 6 different ensembles of North Indian and South Indian melody and rhythm, in the first ever concert event of its kind.

The classic combination of sitar and tabla is beautifully demonstrated by two brilliant musicians. Gaurav Mazumdar is an internationally acclaimed and versatile performer and composer, originally discovered, inspired and tutored by Pandit Ravi Shankar to become the highly acclaimed and popular musician he is today. His influence has changed the face of Indian classical music, and through his innovative techniques of playing the santoor he has developed a distinct style that has enthralled audiences around the world.
 
He is oined by a prolific and and widely admired musician Kousic Sen on tabla.
