Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company

Born in Chennai, Shobana Jeyasingh trained in bharatanatyam with Samraj Pallai.  Moving to London, she founded her eponymous company in 1988. At the forefront of contemporary South Asian dance for over two decades, Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company engages audiences with dynamic and enigmatic choreography, probing into agendas of national identity and social integration.
With a vast body of work encompassing stage, camera and site-specific productions, SJDC regularly tours both nationally and internationally.  Drawing dancers from a range of cultural and training backgrounds, SJDC also sets a precedent for pioneering collaborations in music and design.
Shobana has received numerous accolades including two Time Out Dance Awards, three Digital Dance awards and the London Music and Dance Award.  In 1995 Shobana was awarded an MBE for services to dance. With an honorary MA from Surrey University and an honorary doctorate from De Montfort University, Shobana is a Research Associate at ResCen, the Centre for Research in Creation in the Performing Arts at Middlesex University.
